The National Mission Assignment Board has recommended two astronauts for the mission: one as the primary pilot and the other as the backup.Group Captain Shukla will be the main pilot, with Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair serving as the backup. “The assigned crewmembers will be finally approved to fly to the International Space Station by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP). The recommended gaganyatris will commence their training for the mission from the first week of August 2024,” Isro said in a statement.Who is Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla?Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, graduated from the National Defense Academy and joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter stream on June 17, 2006.He is married to a dentist from Jankipuram, and they have a four-year-old son. Shubhanshu is the first in his family to join the defense forces. His sister, Suchi Shukla, recalled that during the Kargil war, he was a 14-year-old high school student. Two years later, he applied to the National Defence Academy (NDA) on his own, without informing his parents.Eighteen years later, now 38, Shubhanshu enrolled in the Gaganyaan Mission, India's inaugural crewed space mission, again without notifying his family. A graduate of City Montessori School, he is a fighter combat leader and test pilot with around 2,000 flight hours. On February 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Shubhanshu's selection, along with three other astronauts, for the Gaganyaan Mission at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
